October in Jackson is when the air finally gives you something back. The mornings get a little mean, the light goes copper by five, and the Saturdays start mattering in a way September only hinted at.

Here's the honest part. The car you keep meaning to replace is still the point. Everything else — the room in Belhaven, the band at Duling, the watch — is just the life you drive it into. Friday the 23rd is the night the new X5 is in the building.

The oil change, the three-year plan, and 10% off the ticket

The shop at BMW of Jackson keeps it simple: the miles come in, the maintenance stays on schedule, and the big bill never gets its opening.

BMW Value Service Oil Change. Premium synthetic BMW oil and a factory filter — up to six quarts — with parts and labor included, for models in the Value Service Program. Not every car qualifies, so confirm your VIN when you book. The small on-time habit that keeps the big bills off your calendar.

BMW Oil Change Plan — $249 for three years. Prepaid oil and filter changes for three years, labor included, done by BMW-trained techs with Original BMW Parts, up to two changes per contract year. If you keep your cars past the warranty window — and around here, people do — this is the boring math that pays for itself.

10% off service, up to $200. On the ticket, excluding Value Service work and tires, one per person. The easy yes on a repair you were already going to approve.

The waiting room has the coffee and the wifi; the bays have the factory-trained people. That's the whole difference between a fix and a service. Check current dates and claim the offer on the page.

2027 BMW M350 xDrive on the road

On the Road

The new 3 Series is here, and it still drinks gasoline

BMW 3 Series · eighth generation

On the Road

The new 3 Series is here, and it still drinks gasoline

Pull up every argument anyone's had about what a BMW should be, and it ends up in the same place: a 3 Series. Not the flagship, not the halo car. The one that has to be right, because if it isn't, nothing else above it means a thing.

The eighth generation is official now — real studio stills, no German camouflage doing laps on a test track. The Neue Klasse face, the clean sheet, and underneath it the thing a lot of people quietly worried about: a straight six that still runs on gasoline. The i3 is the electric sibling, built on its own architecture. This one is not a hedge. It's the 3 you mean when you say "3 Series."

Then there's the M350 xDrive, which exists to end the dinner-table debate. Three liters, twin-turbo inline six, a 48-volt mild-hybrid assist, and the number that matters: 437 horsepower, 428 pound-feet, zero to sixty in 3.9 seconds. BMW's own figure, not a magazine's stopwatch. There's a Drift Moment coming over the air in 2027 that unlocks rear-wheel drive on command, which is either the best or worst idea you've ever heard, depending on how your insurance feels about you.

U.S. base stickers, before the $1,350 destination charge: 330 from $49,900, 330 xDrive from $51,900, M350 xDrive from $65,900, and the electric i3 50 xDrive from $61,500. They go on sale in the first quarter of 2027. We'll have them on High Street, and you'll have an opinion. Come have it in person.

On Saturday

Ole Miss at Vanderbilt

Two of this state's teams spend October on opposite sides of a lot of road, and both of them are worth your afternoon.

Ole Miss heads to Vanderbilt on the 10th (2:30 Central), hosts Missouri in Oxford on the 17th in the mid-afternoon window, then draws the long straw and goes to Texas on the 24th before closing the month at home against Auburn on the 31st. That Texas trip is the one that tells you something.

Mississippi State has the loud half of its October still ahead: at LSU in the early window on the 17th, then Oklahoma in Starkville on the 24th for a Black Out. The Bulldogs walked into the month 4–0 and met Alabama in the Stripe Out on the 3rd — that one's in the books. A good fall in Starkville, and they know it.

And downtown, mark the 17th twice. Jackson State hosts Florida A&M at Veterans Memorial for Homecoming, 2 p.m. — SWAC football that doesn't need Oxford or Starkville to explain itself, the band worth the ticket on its own. The Egg Bowl is still out there on the horizon, the 27th of November, the night this whole state circles. Not yet. But it's coming, and you can feel the schedule leaning toward it.

Two flags fly over most driveways in this town. October lets you wave both.

On the Table

Wood-fired redfish and oysters at the Manship

The Manship Wood Fired Kitchen sits at 1200 North State in Belhaven, close enough to a dozen other good rooms that it could coast. It doesn't. Chef Alex Eaton and Steven O'Neill run a wood fire and point it at Gulf fish and Mediterranean plates, and the whole thing works at neighborhood scale — which is a polite way of saying it's a restaurant, not a scene.

Start with the Wood Fired Oysters — Pernod, garlic, lemon, chili, parmesan, a slab of focaccia to catch what's left in the shell. The Fried Green Tomatoes come under jumbo crab and remoulade and are not a side dish pretending to be an appetizer. The plate to order, though, is the Redfish "Fisherman Style" — cauliflower, lemon, olive oil, garlic, and a piece of fish that tasted the fire. If someone at the table came for the steak, the Filet Frites with truffle fries is there, and it's honest about being a splurge.

Happy hour runs Monday through Friday, 3 to 6, with half-price pizzettas if you walk in early. Resy's booking lunch and dinner. It's closed Sundays for dinner — check the week you go if brunch is the play. Two people, an hour, a jacket if you feel like it. This is the Belhaven dinner before the Fondren night.

Menu moves with the season — check themanshipjackson.com/menu/dinner the week you go.

In the Cup

A single-origin pour-over on North State at The Bean

The Bean lives at 2914 North State in Fondren, in a room built for sitting still — porch, patio, a walk-up window for the mornings you can't stop. They run Hattiesburg's GRIN Coffee Roastery front to back, which means the coffee has a name and a zip code, not just a logo.

The move is the Single Origin pour-over. The pour-over list rotates whatever's current, so you don't order a season, you order the day — four minutes, no theater, a cup that tastes like someone decided it should. If the pour-over list is bare when you walk in, the Cortado off their espresso does the job without a single wasted ounce of milk.

Open Monday through Saturday, 7 to 6, with brunch on Saturdays from 7:30 and the kitchen going till 2. Closed Sundays. This is the stop before a Fondren drive or a Saturday before the museum — the morning cup, not the after-party.

Snarky Puppy at Duling Hall, Wednesday the 21st

Some nights you dress for. This is one.

Snarky Puppy — the five-time Grammy collective, a band that treats a bass line like an architecture problem and still makes you move — plays Duling Hall on Wednesday, October 21. Doors at 6:30, show at 7:30, all ages. A room that holds about 500 people, which means a group this size is playing at a scale they outgrew years ago. This is not a tribute act and not a free lawn. Advance tickets are $55, day-of $60 plus fees; under-21 is $5 at the door.

Eat Belhaven first — the Manship is a straight shot — then point the car at Fondren. That's the whole evening, built.

Zenith builds the chronograph house a watch with no chronograph

Here's a small heresy worth paying for. Zenith made its name on the El Primero — one of the first automatic chronographs, a movement that beats fast enough to slice a second into tenths. So what do they do for a daily watch? They take the stopwatch off.

The Chronomaster Solo Sport is the first time-only Chronomaster, and it runs the El Primero 3620 at 5 hertz — all that high-beat precision, pointed at just telling you the time. Forty millimeters, a ceramic unidirectional bezel, and a ceramic "Z" dial in white, black, or brown; the black comes without a date if you like a clean face. It's a permanent catalog piece, not a limited drop you have to beg for — $9,800 no-date, $10,900 with date.

It's the same logic that puts you in a car built to be driven instead of parked and posted. The chronograph house, quietly proving the engine was always the point — even with nothing to time.
