Here is what you can buy. Here is what we would suggest.
Start with how you are buying the car. If you are financing, we strongly suggest a vehicle service contract — extra repair coverage for 84 months or 100,000 miles — because year five is on you. If you are leasing, we highlight tire and wheel protection and key replacement, because those are the turn-in items. Everything else on this page is available either way. Nothing is required. Ask for prices in writing.
How you buy
Financing and leasing point to different plans.
Financing: we strongly suggest a vehicle service contract, and we will tell you why. Leasing: we highlight tire and wheel, and key replacement. You still choose.

If a financed car is totaled in a flood, gap protection is the product that covers what insurance does not. That is an insurance question first, then a conversation with us. Insurance Information Institute

What you can buy, and what we would suggest
Lease
Tire and wheel, and key replacement. Those are the plans we highlight on a lease. You can still buy the others.
Finance
A vehicle service contract — 84 months or 100,000 miles. That is the plan we strongly suggest on a loan, because year five is on you. You can still buy the others.
Keep it under 4 years
You are usually still in the factory warranty.
Keep it 5+ years
Talk about a vehicle service contract, and BMW Ultimate Care+ after the included 3 years or 36,000 miles of maintenance.
Higher miles than your lease allows
Wear items and extra lease miles.
Rough roads in Mississippi and in Jackson, Mississippi
Tire and wheel.
Interstate or construction
Windshield.
Kids, pets, street parking
Paint and interior, plus tire, wheel, dent, and key.
Storm or flood
Comprehensive insurance — not a dealership product. Gap protection after a total loss on a loan.
Vehicle service contract — 84 months or 100,000 miles
Extra repair coverage after the factory warranty. If you are financing, this is the plan we strongly suggest, because a loan often lasts past 4 years or 50,000 miles. On a short lease it is usually a lower priority. You can buy it either way. Ask for the price in writing.
Gap protection
If the car is totaled or stolen, gap protection can cover the difference between the insurance check and what you still owe. You can buy it here. On many BMW Financial Services leases it is already included — we will check your contract. On a loan, it is optional, and worth talking about if you put little money down or take a long term.
Paint and interior protection — 60 months
Helps with stains, fading, and day-to-day wear on surfaces. Ask what it covers on your car and get the price in writing.
Theft protection
Help if the car is stolen. Ask what the plan pays and get the price in writing.
Windshield protection — 60 months
Chip and crack repair. A spidered windshield can be a lease-end charge, and it is a nuisance on a car you own too.
Tire, wheel, dent, and key — 60 months
Potholes, nails, glass, small dents, and a lost key. If you are leasing, this is the plan we highlight — with key replacement — because those are the items that show up at turn-in. You can buy it on a loan as well.
Can a dealer make me buy gap protection or extra repair coverage?
No. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission say these products are optional and not required to get a loan. Ask for prices in writing.
If I am financing, what would you suggest?
We strongly suggest a vehicle service contract — extra repair coverage for 84 months or 100,000 miles — because a loan often lasts past BMW’s 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty. Year five is on you unless you add a plan. You can still buy the other plans. Here is what you can buy, and here is what we would suggest.
If I am leasing, what would you suggest?
We highlight tire and wheel protection and key replacement. Those are the items that show up at turn-in — a cut tire, a gouged wheel, a lost key. You can still buy the other plans. Nothing is required.
Do I need gap protection on a BMW lease?
Gap protection can cover the difference between the insurance check and what you still owe after a total loss. You can buy it here. On many BMW Financial Services leases it is already included — we will check your contract. On a loan, it is optional.
Is extra repair coverage worth it on a short lease?
A typical lease stays inside the factory 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, so a vehicle service contract is usually a lower priority on a short lease. If you are financing and will keep the car past year four, that is when we would suggest it.
